Learn the shape and sound together
Begin by recognising each letter in its isolated form. Say the name, then practise the sound with a short vowel. This prevents the common problem of knowing the alphabet sequence but not recognising letters independently.
Families of similar shapes
- ب ت ث share one base shape and differ through their dots.
- ج ح خ share one shape with different dot patterns.
- د ذ and ر ز are paired shapes that do not join to the following letter.
- س ش, ص ض, ط ظ and ع غ should be compared as visual pairs.
Names are not reading sounds
The name باء is useful for identifying the letter, but when reading بَ you say “ba”, not the full name “bāʾ”. Always respond to the vowel sign written on the letter.
Accuracy before speed
Point to letters in random order rather than only reading alphabetically. Recognition is secure when you can identify every letter without relying on what came before it.
